Daniel McGrath was an eighteen-year-old labourer when he listed in the Gordon Highlanders on 14 September 1892 having previously served in the 4th Liverpool Regiment. He served in the Chitral Relief Expedition of 1895, and the subsequent operations on the Punjab Frontier. He also saw service in the Boer War being entitled to a two clasp Q.S.A. and a two clasp K.S.A. and was discharged on 13 September 1904.

Emigrating to Canada, he is recorded as a merchant living at Moose Jaw when he re-enlisted at Saskatoon, Canada on 27 October 1914. He embarked at Montreal for overseas service on 29 May 1915, initially with the 32nd Battalion, posted to the 28th Battalion on 17 September 1915. McGrath was discharged on 15 January 1919.

According to his service papers he died on 8 January 1946. Curiously he gives his place of birth on his 1892 enlistment papers as Accrington, Lancashire and on his 1914 enlistment papers as Tipperary, Ireland on 18 November 1875; sold together with a 28th Canadian Infantry cap badge and an adapted Gordon Highlanders cap badge.
