Thomas Richard Sly was the son of Thomas and Pleasant Sly of Witham, Essex. He was baptised on 8 November 1833 at St.Nicholas', Witham. At the age of 19 whilst working as a labourer, he attested at Witham on 26 July 1853 into the Royal Artillery and was given the service number 3963. Posted to the 10th Battalion as Gunner and Driver, he spent 1 year serving in the Crimea followed by 3 years serving in Malta.

On his return to the U.K. Sly was living at the Royal Artillery Barracks, Woolwich in 1861 and married Miss Emily Goodale at the Parish Church, Aldershot on 23 February 1867. Moving to the barracks at Dorchester by 1871 with his wife, he was recommended for his L.S. & G.C. medal on 1 April 1872.

Discharged at Devonport on 12 June 1876, he listed his intention to live at Barrack Hill, Newport, Monmouthshire. By 1891 he was classified as an army pensioner living in Isington, near Binsted, Hampshire. Sly died at the boarding house he ran in in Osborne Road, Farnborough, Hampshire on 28 November 1903 from senile decay; sold with copied service papers and death certificate etc.
