Brian William Kennedy was born in Camden, New South Wales, Australia on 10 October 1942, the son of William and Barbara Kennedy of 40 Stanley Street, Leabrook, South Australia. Enlisting with the 1st Recruit Training Battalion on 22 February 1960, he joined the 3rd Royal Australian Regiment on 8 September 1960.
Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 15 December 1962 at the Officer Cadet School, Portsea he joined the Royal Australian Artillery. Attached to the 3rd Royal Australian Regiment on 14 November 1964 he served with them on the Malay Peninsula. Not long after this the Regiment was involved in Operation Claret, cross border raids between Malaya and Borneo.
Kennedy visited South Vietnam in March 1965 and in December that same year was advanced Lieutenant. Returning to Sydney on 16 June 1966 he was further promoted Captain on 1 July and, doubtless in light of his experience, undertook training roles for the next two years.
Returning to active service he was appointed Officer Commanding a detachment of 131 Divisional Locating Battery on 27 August 1969 with whom he saw service in South Vietnam from that same day. Returning to Australia on 27 August 1970 he was appointed Battery Captain of 121 Light Anti-Aircraft Battery, Darwin on 4 July 1972.Undertaking a training programme at the Royal Military College of Science Kennedy was advanced Major there in 1974.
Appointed commander of the Proof and Experimental Establishment at Graytown on 24 September 1976. Promoted Lieutenant-Colonel on 22 October 1979, he was injured the next year in an accident and resigned the next year on 24 November 1981. Kennedy remained a member of the Army Reserve until 20 March 1987 when he joined the Inactive List; sold together with copied research and an associated photograph of the recipient wearing miniatures of the General Service Medal with one clasp, Vietnam Medal 1964-73 and South Vietnam Medal 1964.
