(x) General Service 1962-2007, 1 clasp, Northern Ireland (Capt. J. M. Messer-Bennetts R. Signals), heavy contact marks, very fine
John Mallabone Messer-Bennetts was born at Teignmouth on 26 June 1941, the eldest son of Catherine and Captain Michael Bennetts, Royal Marines. Educated at Cherthouse (1954-1958) he was awarded a Royal Naval Scholarship in April 1957 and married Rosina Wilson, daughter of Geoffrey Wilson (M.P. for Truro) on 14 February 1963.
Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant with the Royal Signals Cadets at Mons Cadet School on 27 April 1963. Messer-Bennetts was advanced Major with the Cadets before being transferred to the Army on a short-service commission on 27 April 1966. Joining the Royal Corps of Signals he was advanced Captain with them on 27 April 1969.
It was around this time that Messer-Bennetts saw service in Northern Ireland. Further advanced Major he retired with that rank on 1 December 1977. Messer-Bennetts was a qualified helicopter pilot in his private life and died at Bodmin, Cornwall in June 1993; sold together with a cloth patch and copied research.
