India General Service 1895-1908, 1 clasp, Punjab Frontier 1897-98 (4675 Pte W. Vearnals 2d Bn Derby: Regt.), very fine
William James Vearnals was born at Matlock, Derbyshire, and attested for the Sherwood Foresters on 28 May 1894. He served at Home until 24 December 1896 when he served in the East Indies until 4 October 1899. Vearnals then served in Malta from 5 October 1899-13 December 1901. He then served in South Africa from 14 December 1901-15 September 1902, and then spent the remainder of his service at Home until he was discharged on 27 May 1906. He re-enlisted on 5 September 1914 with the outbreak of the Great War and was sent to the 5th Reserve Cavalry, 1st Royal Dragoons, at York. Promoted to Sergeant a few days later. He was subsequently posted to Nottingham and was a founder member of the 17th (Welbeck Rangers) Bn in which he became the Transport Sergeant, a position which he held for three years, during this time he entered the war in France on 19 June 1915 and was slightly wounded as a result of shrapnel but was not eligible for a Silver War Badge. He was finally discharged on 5 January 1919 at the Dispersal Station, Press Heath.
Vearnals is additionally entitled to the Queen's South Africa 1899-1902 medal with clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal and South Africa 1902. His Great War Medal Index Card although stating that he served in France from 19 June 1915 the entry for the 1914-15 Star is crossed out stating it was claimed in error. He is however entitled to a British War and Victory Medal Pair.
