There were 163 Pegu clasps issued to Rattler.
Samuel Madden was appointed Assistant Engineer Class II at Fisgard on 25 November 1847. Advanced Assistant Engineer Class I on 30 August 1851 he joined Rattler on 23 September 1851 with that rank. She was on the East Indies Station during the Second Anglo-Burmese war and took part in the storming of Rangoon on 14 April 1852.
Madden was still with the vessel when she took part in the Battle of Ty-ho Bay alongside H.M.S. Eaglet and the U.S.S. Powhatan. The three warships took on a fleet of Chinese pirates comprising 36 War Junks, they launched small boats to board the pirate vessels and captured 20, killed 500 pirates and capturing 1,000 more.
Leaving Rattler on 17 May 1856 Madden was appointed Inspector of Machinery with the Naval Dockyard tug Charlotte on 16 January 1870. He was advanced Chief Engineer with her on 8 November 1870 and posted to Agincourt on 22 July 1872. Finally joining Minotaur on 15 September 1871 he retired 19 August 1872.
