New Zealand 1845-66, undated reverse (852. Pte. R. Fitzgerald. 70th Foot), officially engraved naming, contact marks, very fine

Purchased at Format, Birmingham, June 1969.

Richard/Robert Fitzgerald was born circa 1834 at Charleville, County Cork and joined the 70th Foot at Canterbury on 4 January 1861. He was present with his unit in New Zealand from April 1864-April 1866 (Medal), sharing in the actions in the Waikato, Taranaki and Orakau. Returned home, he served attached to various units before going out to India in early 1875. Fitzgerald served with the Service Company in Afghanistan (Medal) and then in Egypt & Sudan (Medal & clasp, Bronze Star). He was discharged in June 1889 with nearly 30 years of service to his name and intending to live in Guernsey.
