New Zealand 1845-66, reverse undated (2556 Serjt. D. Daley. 40th Foot.), slightly later issue with engraved naming, light edge bruising, otherwise very fine

Denis Daley was born at Abbeyleix, Ireland in 1825. Enlisting in the 40th Regiment of Foot on 20 May 1847, he was discharged at Aldershot on 3 June 1868 after just over 21 years' service of which he spent seven years and nine months in Australia and six years and three months in New Zealand. In 1852, whilst a Corporal, Daley was tried by court martial and reduced to the ranks but by 1865 he had redeemed himself and was promoted to Sergeant.
