Edward Smith was born at Bletchingley/Bleckinby, Surrey and was baptised in May 1825. He joined the Royal Artillery in 1848 and served during the Second and Third Kaffir Wars with the 5th Company, 4th Battalion and the 4th Company, 5th Battalion Royal Artillery. Smith was discharged in 1853, after 6 years and 246 days service.
