1929 "One hundred copies of this edition of The Legion Book have been printed. No copies are for sale, as all are held in the gift of H.R.H. The Prince of Wales. This is Number 78".
"The Legion Book" edited by Captain H. Cotton Minchin was intended as a fund raising venture for the British Legion. 89 prominent writers and artists contributed to the volume. This quarto de luxe volume, with a pigskin binding, decorated in blind and gilt, top edge gilt, is signed over five pages by each of the contributors. There are 16 captioned plates, some signed by the artists, with 32 cellotypes.
The signatories include Winston Churchill, Eric Ravilious, W. Rothenstein, Eric Gill, John Galsworthy, Rudyard Kipling, Edmund Blunden, William Orpen, Laurence Binyon, W. Heath Robinson, Robert Bridges, John Nash, P.G. Wodehouse, Eric H. Kennington, Augustus John, David Low, Paul Nash, William Nicholson, H. Belloc, Mark Gertler, V. Sackville-West, Hugh Walpole, Max Beerbohm, Rebecca West, G.K. Chesterton, Edith Sitwell, Oswald Birley, Aldous Huxley, Jacob Epstein, Walter de la Mare, Sarah Gertrude Millin, Prime Ministers Ramsay MacDonald, Stanley Baldwin, D. Lloyd George (opposite plate 3 by Beerbohm titled "Prime Ministers in my Day"), G. Clemenceau (opposite collotype 20). Printed by the Curwen Press, London on hand-made paper. A superb volume in wonderful condition, housed in a bespoke box numbered 78 in the top right corner.
