Cabinet of President Grover Cleveland

1888-1895 Collection of inscribed and signed cabinet photographs of leading members of the first Cleveland Cabinet, presented to Mary Endicott, daughter of the Secretary of War, William Crowninshield Endicott, who married the British statesman, Joseph Chamberlain MP as his third wife in 1888. Included are signed photographs (either on the front or inscribed on the reverse) of Frances Cleveland, wife of the President, Attorney General Garland, Secretary of the Navy Whitney, Postmaster General Vilas, Secretary of State Bayard, Secretary of the Treasury Fairchild, Secretary of War Endicott, Secretary of the Interior Lamar (2), Rear Admirals Rodgers & Worden, C-in-C US Army General Sheriden, George Bancroft (Historian), wives of the Russian and Swedish Ministers, 1888 formal image of the Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States (unsigned), with a group of family and other photographs (13), with two Secretary of War "At Home" cards. A letter from Mary Chamberlain on Windsor Castle notepaper in 1895 to "Guilliame" (her brother) reports on their stay "under the roof of Her Majesty, having come to dine and pass the night". She refers to the presence of the King of the Belgians and his daughter, conversations with Queen Victoria and the King who insisted on speaking in French, her visits to country houses, shoots, and their political and social schedule in Birmingham. An eight sided letter filled with interest. Included is a copy of the biography of Mary Chamberlain "Mistress of Herself", by Diana Whitehill Laing (1965) (35)
