Rudolph C. Slatin, Pasha (1857-1832)
1908 Autograph letter signed R. Slatin with the original envelope posted from Vienna to England (stamps torn off), written in English to Major Wheatley discussing the death of a mutual friend, "Phippy" Pownell. He discusses his recent operation, and expresses his love for England, "your country will never be again to me what it was".
Slatin, an Austrian Colonel, Governor of Darfur, had been a prisoner of the Mahdi and escaped in 1895 after years of captivity. Framed and glazed (220x155mm)
