1832-1888 A collection of diaries, notebooks and a writing portfolio ex the Cavendish and Harcourt families with many references to political and court affairs, including a manuscript recipe book dated 1853 kept by Elizabeth G.H. Crauford, her journal for 1852 beginning with her marriage to Colonel James Crauford and their travels to the Continent where on 6th August "We left Brussels in an open carriage to see Waterloo".
Pocket books for 1832-1834, written by Elisabeth Georgiana Cavendish mention a ball at Buckingham Palace, Burlington House, social arrangements, her Letts Diary for 1836 describes a day by day lifestyle visiting Windsor, Papa staying at the Castle, Colonel Cavendish was equerry to William IV. Lizzie Harcourt's diary for 1859 mentions Crauford's promotion after the Indian Mutiny, the marriage of Prince Napoleon to Princess Clotilde of Sardinia, Captain Malet and the "Lucknow Heroes", a visit by the Princess Royal. The diary for 1861 refers to the Prince of Prussia and Prince of Wales at Dover, and the health of the Prince Consort "an alarming bulletin of the state of Prince Albert". Queen Victoria's golden jubilee in 1887 is detailed in the entries of June that year. The diary for 1888 continues with rounds of social engagements in aristocratic society.
An attractive expanding correspondence case (27x20x3cm), with a medallion commemorating the 1887 Jubilee affixed to the top flap, has within it an admission card to Devonshire House to view the Royal Jubilee Procession, sundry correspondence including a letter from the Grand Hotel Victoria, Menaggio, and two journals of a journey from Chiswick, London to Florence, Italy in 1828.
