Napoleon's Syrian-Egyptian Campaign
A series of nine documents signed by Generals, Commanders and Chiefs in Bonaparte's Armee D'Orient, including 1798 (19 May) ALS from Hector D'Aure, Commander, written in French just one day before his departure from Toulon for Egypt, "I am leaving tomorrow with the fleet ... all the youth are leaving, LaSalle Clement are already in Civita Vecchia";
1798 (7 December) ALS from Louis-Charles-Antoine Desaix in Cairo to General Donzelot in 'Upper Egypt', the day Desaix travelled with 1,000 men to support the area. Desaix would defeat the Mamelukes at Behneceh and Murad Bey at Sediman, and was termed by some locals, the 'Just Sultan';
1799 (6 December) part printed document signed by General Charles Francis Joseph Dugua in Cairo to Kleber regarding a matter related to General Rampon;
1800 (1 Jan.) part printed document signed by General in Chief, Kleber, requesting of the Payeur General that a payment to Damien Bracevich (an interpreter and member of the Commission des Sciences et des Arts), additionally signed by Bracevich;
1800 (8-24 May) "Ordre du jour, du 4 prairial an 8" ordering that those in breach of regulations for Cairo are ordered to evacuate and surrender property;
1800 (20 July) ALS on printed letter paper from General Reynier to the Chief physician, Desgenettes concerning the production of bread, just a month after the assassination of Kleber;
1800 (31 August) ALS on "Bureua Topographique" printed letter paper from Chief Engineer and director of Surveyors and Geographers in the Nile, Pierre Jacotin in Lisbeh;
1800 (7 November) original manuscript copy of General Menou's "Ordre du Jour" in which Menou sets out rules for the organisation of ports, and for all generals, governors and accountants for collection tax, there having been cases of officials demanding more than what is due. The reverse with translation into Arabic;
1801 (28 March) part printed ALS from Genera Morand in Damiette, to General Belliard, being a lengthy report on the situation in El Arish, Eastern Egypt and the advancement of the Ottomans, dated just one week since defeat to the British in the Battle of Alexandria.
A superbly researched and collated group of rare material providing valuable insight into the French campaign.
