Edward Prince of Wales (King Edward VIII)
1920 Eight sided autograph letter written in pencil by the Prince of Wales to his mistress, Mrs Freda Dudley Ward "On the train" to Portsmouth, where he was to embark aboard H.M.S. Renown for a tour to Australia and New Zealand. With the addressed envelope initialled "E", sealed with the spider wax seal used on his correspondence to her. Part of an extensive correspondence of intimate love letters that were published in "Letters from a Prince", edited by Rupert Godfrey, (Little, Brown and Company 1998). They provide a deep insight into the personality and character of the Prince of Wales.
"My sweetheart, my blessed darling beloved little Fredie Angel...our love is the most sacred and holy thing that my small baby brain can possibly conceive, sweetie.... He refers to an agonising seven month absence, the official departure from England, his first port of call at Barbados, with "Bertie" his brother, Prince Albert taking this letter back to London to give her. Signed "your David" at the top of page one.
A remarkable and hugely personal letter by the future King.
