The National Anthem
1919 Correspondence on the subject of proposed changes to the National Anthem, comprising a typed letter from Lord Stamfordham, private secretary to the King, to Sir Henry Newbolt, asking for his advice on the proposed revision, mentioning that he did not know Rudyard Kipling, and enclosing typewritten copies of his letter to the Poet Laureate. A fascinating exchange of letters.
"There is a desire in some quarters...for new words for the National Anthem. The soldiers, it is said, were inclined to weary of the reiteration of the three verses, all referring to the King, and to ask for something about our country, our Homes, the Dominions" (3)
