King William IV
1829 Two page autograph letter written from Bushey House, signed "William" by the Duke of Clarence, who was to ascend the throne as William IV in 1830. He writes to an unnamed correspondent referring to the Carbineers and forwarding an enclosed answer to Lord Hill (Commander-in-Chief of the Forces at the time). He refers to an individual who "has been ill used by some of the officers on the service establishment". The Duke, who had a naval career, had been forced to resign as Lord High Admiral in 1828 after disappearing with a squadron of ships for ten days without advising of their destination.
