KING AND EMPEROR, Royal shield and supporters, edge plain, 19.075g, 12h (Giordano 260c; W&E 6720; BHM 4302), light foxing in otherwise brilliant fields, the portrait with delightful cameo definition, an evidently early striking before the legends were officially smoothed to mask the embarrassment of Edward VIII's Abdication, choice, much as struck, extremely rare in this metal, in original red fitted Spink & Son case, in NGC holder, graded PF66 ULTRA CAMEO (Cert. #8534301-003)
Spink has an illustrious history of producing medals, dating back to the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887. In the 1890s, Spink purchased the Soho Medal premises of A D Lowenstark and began producing Military, Wedding and Jubilee Medals under Royal Patronage, as well as specific commemoratives for the 1902, 1911, 1936 and 1953 Coronations. All are highly prized today, particularly the last two, as no official medals were produced for the crowning of King Edward VIII (for obvious reasons) or the late Queen Elizabeth II, in favour of the familiar 'Horseback' cupro-nickel Crown
