Provenance
The Craven Collection of British Historical Medals
The Earl and Countess of Northumberland arrived back in England from Ireland on the 17th March 1764. The grand illuminations designed by the Earl and Countess to celebrate His Majesty's birthday were postponed, owing to the death of the Earl's mother. But on the 5th June 1764 the celebrations took place. Fifteen thousand people were invited and ten thousand lamps made the illuminations; it is possible that the date 1764 on the obverse refers to this event.
The castle was reconstructed in the Gothic style, principally by Robert Adam c.1770-1780.
