In an effort to find peace, the Congress of Utrecht opened in January 1712, and while it was still in session, French forces retook Bouchain, Quesnoy and Douai. This forced most of the remaining members of the Alliance to agree what terms they could with the French. Alone among the Allies, the German States fought on but were forced to agree peace terms one year later.
