MARIA • D • G • AVR • PRIN • NAT • DE • IORC •, draped bust left, hair breaded with pearls, edge plain, 42mm (Eimer 256; MI i, 568/235; Farquhar 1910/208; van Loon III, 222), some minor wispy hairlines and partially weakly struck to obverse legend, otherwise with a handsome lustre to grey-blue toned surfaces, extremely fine, scarcely offered at commerce in such condition, in PCGS holder, graded MS62 (Cert. #48580540)

In 1677, William, then the Prince of Orange, married his first cousin Mary, the daughter of the Duke of York, later King James II of England. Their joint reign lasted until Mary's untimely death from smallpox at the age of thirty-two in 1694.
