Lot: 3190

(x) Brunei
1906 (1 Oct.) 2c. on 8c. black and vermilion complete vertical column [8] of ten with sheet margins at top and bottom, [R8/5] with variety "two cents" double", [R8/9-10] showing variety "two cents" omitted in pair with normal; one or two folds along perfs and occasional irregularity in the distribution of the gum as one might expect, though the entire strip is unmounted mint, with mounts in the margin only and remarkably fine for an item of these proportions and age. A most important item for collectors, there only being ten such strips possible from the sheet, the first two columns residing in the Royal Philatelic Collection and others broken up. S.G. 13, 13a/b, £29,000+. Photo

Notes: Each sheet went through the press three times, with the Brunei overprint applied as a setting of 100 to the full sheet, and the surcharge applied using a setting of 50 (10x5) in two further operations. On this one sheet the lower application of the surcharge was misplaced upwards by one row causing the errors.

Subject to 5% tax on Hammer Price in addition to 20% VAT on Buyer’s Premium.
