John Menzies envelope, state 1b (small imprint) 1840 (July), sent unstamped from Edinburgh, addressed to the Poor Law Commission Office in London. The face struck with "paidatedinburgh" 18.07.40 d.s. with corresponding red handstruck "1", all overstruck with London "paid" tombstone 20.07.40 d.s.; the reverse with "lauriston/place" receiving handstamp and intact yellow sealing wafer showing initial "R". Some creasing and minor peripheral imperfections otherwise fine and a most dramatic cover.
