1841-53 One Penny Red-Brown
Framed page dated 1841 bearing six 1841-53 1d. red-brown used (mixed condition) mounted above a poem on the subject of stamps believed to have been written by Albert Smith (1816-1860, English physician, author and mountaineer), the foot with 1d. pink postal stationery cut out. The reverse of the frame shows three labels: The Stamp Exhibition Dorland Hill, 1936, where it was exhibited, a manuscript note reading "The earliest known poetry on the postage stamp", and a cut out of the pome reproduced in "Stamp Collecting" 1936 (12 Dec.). While it is not known if this is in the hand of Smith, it is nevertheless a charming piece.
