"Rainbow" Trials
State 2/3: Complete sheet of twelve (4x3) in deep blue on thin wove paper, inscribed at foot by Edwin Hill "E. Colour plain", fine and a rare piece of remarkable colour.
Notes: Rowse notes this as one of thirteen colour variations in trial of the new 2d. ink sent by Bacon to Rowland Hill in early November 1840; none of which were found to be sufficiently fugitive, though Bacon believed this colour to be the best for printing. Illustrated in "Rainbow Trials", page 138
