1861 (1 Jan.) envelope with letter from Japan marked "From James Dixon, Cooper, H.M.Ship Vulcan" (a troopship), bearing 1854-57 1d. red-brown, AH, tied by "a86" mailboat numeral in black, countersigned by Commanding Office in approval of the 1d. Sailor's rate, and struck with red "cr" in transit to the Caledonian Railway, the reverse with Stonehaven 22.03.61 d.s. Interesting contents remark on the boat leaving Hong Kong and the cold weather. Envelope with some blemishes and small tear to reverse flap, otherwise and interesting and rare cover. Photo.
