Great Britain
1840 One Penny Black
Plate 6
FJ, tied by a black Maltese Cross to entire to Tavistock with red Swansea c.d.s. (25.8.1841) on the reverse. The adhesive appears to be badly cut resulting in "postage" being at the foot and with somewhat ragged margins on all sides. The accompanying M. Jackson Certificate (2025) states "Although at first glance the stamp was suspected of being partially rouletted, in depth analysis carried out by David Escott concluded that "No characteristics could be observed on the edges of FI that would indicate the presence of roulette separation." He also commented that the top and left edges show randomly occurring "low amplitude peaks" which are characteristic of tear separation against a straight edge". Most unusual and an early apparent attempt at some form of mechanical separation. Photo.
