QL, margins small to good but shaved at foot, tied by experimental black Maltese Cross of Leek on entire with printed Lee Mills near Congleton bill head and addressed to Cheddleton Grange, near Leek; the flap bears a good strike of 1840 (24 Dec.) Leek c.d.s. which opens for display. There is some soiling but this is a rare cover, there being only one other pre-February 1841 cover recorded bearing a black Leek Maltese Cross.
