World War I Censors
The Kurt Groth Correspondence
Kurt Groth came from Svenborg then in Schleswig part of Ducy of Schleswig-Holstein. He was the Agent in Rangoon of Behn Meyer & Co. Ltd. After WWI began he was considered a foreign national subject to imprisonment. His mail was subject to censorship and forms some of the earliest censored mail from Burma. Subsequently he was interned at Ahmednagar, India.
His wife, Thora, returned to her family, Marsmann in Svenborg, just before the start of the war, possibly sick. She caught a ship, the S.S. Gloucestershire, at Port Said which was possibly a hospital ship.

1914 (1 June) - 1924 (7 Mar.) envelopes (13, one registered) and cards (2) addressed to Svendborg, the first eight envelopes to 29 August without censor markings and includes 1914 (1 June) from Thora Groth to her mother and 1914 (8 June) from Kurt to his wife addressed c/o Gloucestershire, c/o Agents Bibby Line, Port Said, then includes 1914 (6 Sept.) to his wife in Denmark showing two strikes of "passed censor/bombay" in violet, one tying "Opened under/Martial Law" label on reverse, 1914 (25 Oct.) envelope with same markings and label, 1916 (25 Feb.) and 1919 (15 Apr.) POW pre-printed cards with German message on reverse (different printings) from Ahmednagar, 1916 (26 July) printed POW envelope from Ahmednagar, and 1924 (19 Mar.) envelope from Ong Keng Seng to Marsmann Groth & Co. in Svendborg in Denmark
