1880 (2 Sept.) entire autograph letter (without envelope) from Captain Bloomfield Gough to his mother having been on Lord Roberts' march from Kabul to Kandahar having defeated Ayub Khan at the battle of Maiwan. The letter, written over four sides of lettersheet, is headed "Khandahar!!!!!!" and begins, "Hoooooraaaayyy, glorious victory!!!!!!*****" and gives details of the march "I always used to go to sleep on my horse & wake with a horrid start finding myself just tumbling off. & oh how hot it was as we used not to get into our tents till the afternoon", having arrived "we found Ayab Khan waiting for us & immediately sent out a recconoitering party ti recconoitre his position which was a great success as he opened fire upon them & though he killed & wounded some dozen he entirely exposed his position which was like this" - giving a half page illustration of the attack and positioning of the participants. Some usual foxing to paper and a little splitting along folder though entirely legible and intact and an interesting and historically important letter offered with complete typed transcript.
