1856 (27 Nov.) envelope from Alken, South Carolina to Buness, Isle of Unst, Shetlands bearing 3c. red and 10c. green vertical pair (Types 2 and 3), all tied by "aiken/nov/27/s.c." d.s., the face with 19c. charge mark (16c. packet rate, 3c. inland delivery) in red alongside America/paid/liverpool d.s., ultimately underpaid by 1c. (the rate to the UK being 24c., hence manuscript "Paid" covering the 1c. collected in cash, the reverse with Aberdeen 16.12.56 and Lerwick 26.12.56 d.s., both in green. Envelope with usual defects though attractive and scarce.
