1885 (16 July) Military Telegraph from the Assistant Commander at Mafeking to Paul Methuen in Setlagoli which reads, "If J.S. McHattie has not yet passed your station please detain him & send him back to Mafeking if passed there send down line after him wire reply", on the reverse, written in ink, "Trooper Hall, Bring back this man at once" and signed Paul Methuen. With a fine strike of Field Office "S H" datestamp in purple. Rare
These telegrams were part of a series relating to the McHattie incident. McHattie was providing supplies to the Field Force and was accused of improper dealings. He was arrested, forcefully claimed his innocence, and released. Methuen kept copies of the telegrams because McHattie threatened a lawsuit
