British West Charterland Expedition
1897 (3 Nov.) stampless Bechuanaland Protectorate official envelope to the Military Secretary, Government House, Cape Town marked, "From N'gami:- no stamps obtainable" bearing "palachwe/khamas town" c.d.s., manuscript "T8d" in pencil, large handstruck "8d" in black and an indistinct handstamp in purple which reads "... / - - dec 97/control & audit" and bearing, on the reverse, a fair strike of the scarce Cape Town "charge clerk" (8.11); some tearing and soiling. The expedition to Ngamiland left Mafeking on 4th May 1896 and was led by Captain F. Lugard on behalf of the British West Charterland Ltd. They proceeded north via Gaberones and Palapye where arrangements were made with Khama who agreed to provide a weekly runner service to maintain contact between the advancing expedition and with the outside world via Palapye, where mail entered the official Protectorate postal system
