1897 (13 July) stampless envelope addressed to King Williams Town and marked, "On Active Service with Bechuanaland Field Force Stamps Unobtainable" and countersigned by "EB Hartley/PMO/Col Forces" with a good strike of "kuruman/bechuanaland" alongside, the reverse with part arrival c.d.s. (18.7); small fragment of the flap is missing. Scarce Cape mail. Photo

Surg. Lt. Col. Edmund Baron Hartley V.C., was a surgeon with the Cape Mounted Rifles. He was wounded in action in early April 1897 while attending a mortally wounded soldier. He was awarded the Victoria Cross during the Basuto War in 1879
