Dating from the early 2000’s the idea of the Order of the Hashemite Crown developed whilst the Iraqi Constitutional Monarchy Movement led by Sharif Ali bin Hussein envisaged the restoration of the Iraqi Kingdom with himself as king. A first cousin of the murdered King Faisal II who survived the 1958 revolution - his maternal grandfather was King Ali of Hejaz, 1924-25. The call for the restoration of the monarchy received little support and thus Order of the Hashemite Crown remains a historical footnote and it is unknown whether the order was ever actually used. It is also unclear whether Sharif Ali is the legitimate heir to the throne as in accordance with the Constitution of the Kingdom of Iraq the legitimate heir would be Prince Ra’ad bin Ze’id. The design of the centre of both badge and star is taken from the arms of the Kingdom of Iraq depicting the land of Iraq and the rivers Euphrates and Tigris with their confluence at the head of the Gulf. The two date palms symbolize the date groves of southern Iraq. At the top a royal Iraqi crown. The Arabic inscription reads, Order of the Hashemite Crown.
