John Rowan Rowan-Robinson was born at Manor Hamilton, Leitrim, Ireland on 25 January 1876, the son of Surgeon General William Christie Rowan-Robinson, Royal Army Medical Corps, and Sarah Isabella of Canterbury.
Educated at the King's School Canterbury, he enlisted in the 2nd Dragoons in order to see action in the Boer War. Nor was he to be disappointed, for, as a Corporal, he was present at the relief of Kimberley and in the actions at Paardeberg and Driefontein. Then, in May 1900, he obtained a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Leicestershire Regiment, in which he saw further service in the Transvaal and was advanced to Lieutenant in December 1901.
In December 1906, Rowan-Robinson was seconded for service with the Indian Supply and Transport Corps, and he was still serving in that capacity at the time of being awarded his D.S.O. as a Captain / Temporary Major in Mesopotamia in November 1916. And further active service ensued in the Third Afghan War and Waziristan operations of 1919-21, in which he was given the Brevet of Lieutenant-Colonel.
Rowan-Robinson, who appears to have been employed by the Air Ministry on the eve of the Second World War, died in Maidenhead, Berkshire in November 1956.
