(x) Two autograph letters by Captain Thomas Hardy, Lord Nelson’s Flag Captain during the Battle of Trafalgar, one of which references Nelson and another which was written to an American General during the War of 1812
Letter addressed to Captain Longford of H.M.S. Fury, written on board H.M.S. Victory off the coast of Toulon and in which he mentions his friend Nelson, “I think Lord Nelson looks as well as I ever saw him he desires to be kindly remembered to you” and asks “I have a young relation who is anxious to go to Sea if you can make room for him in the class I shall be much obliged”, signed by Hardy, dated 5 December 1803; light age stains and folds, in very fine condition for its age
Letter written by Hardy whilst in command of H.M.S. Ramillies off the coast of New London, Connecticut during the War of 1812, addressed to United States Army Brigadier General Burbeck, the commander at New London, to ask for permission to forward clothing to the British prisoners at Norwich, dated 14 August 1813, ageing, two slight pinholes along lower fold (2)
