(x) Alexander Davison's Medal for Trafalgar 1805, pewter with copper ring and integral ball-and-ring suspension, highlights polished and scratches to obverse and reverse fields, good fine and better
For many years, it has been stated in various sources that Davison's Medal for Trafalgar was awarded exclusively to the surviving crew of Admiral Nelson's flagship, H.M.S. Victory, after the battle. However, as this would suggest a striking and issuance of approximately 700 medals and the actual number of medals appears to be extremely low, this long-held opinion is now in doubt. Instead, recent theories suggest the medal was struck in December 1805 and awarded to the men of H.M.S. Victory who participated in Nelson's funeral on 9 January 1806 - thus making it a much more unusual (and rarer) award than hitherto believed.
