Richard James Legg was born on 14 May 1903 and was appointed Pilot Officer in March 1926. Before his share in the Battle of Britain during which he was a Wing Commander, Legg was serving as Air Attache at Athens and then Ankara from December 1939-April 1940. Officer Commanding RAF Wittering in 1943, he took the same post at Northolt in May 1944 and then at Washington from July 1945. He took a 'mention' (London Gazette 1 January 1943) and the American Legion of Merit (London Gazette 19 August 1947) for his troubles.
Returned to Ankara as Air Attache in December 1949, he was Head of UK Services Liaison Staff in South Africa from November 1952 until retiring in November 1953. Legg died near Pretoria in a road accident on 6 February 1960.
