George Pringle Impey was born on 27 May 1889 at Cathcart, Eastern Cape, the second son of George Grey Impey. During the Great War he was commissioned into the Intelligence Department and was attached to the King's African Rifles. A note with the Lot states:
'Served in German East Africa, in Military Intelligence, attached to the KAR, working behind enemy line under-cover, dressed as an Arab.'
Settling in East Africa, he was in partnership with Juma Hajee in his shops in the Uasin Gishu. Having retired to Canada, he is understood to have died in 1992 at the grand old age of 103.
