William Frederick Curteis was born circa January 1849 and was the second son of Frederick William Curteis and Elizabeth Wilby. He was raised in Walcot, Bath and was educated at Tonbridge School and later, Jesus College Cambridge, where he earnt his athletics blue in 1870, specialising in the high jump. Upon leaving university, in 1872 he enlisted in the 22nd Regiment of Foot, which later expanded into the Cheshire Regiment. Curteis served with the 2nd Battalion in India, fighting in the Burma campaign between 1887-89 as a Major. He then served in South Africa from circa 1890 - 1900 and was promoted to Colonel. He then returned home, was awarded the Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1901, and later died at Lewes, East Sussex on 20 September 1901, aged 52 years old. He is buried on the Tonbridge Castle grounds and was further entitled to the South Africa 1901 clasp.
