The India General Service Medal awarded to Squadron Leader E. C. Fyson, Royal Air Force, who was killed in action whilst Pilot of a Stirling of No. 620 Squadron during a 'Special Duties' operation to the South-East of France for the S.O.E.

Edward Creighton Fyson - or 'Teddy' to his friends and comrades - was born on 27 June 1916 at Chennai and took a diploma from the Royal Agricultural College at Cirencester, with his family settling at Hexham, Northumberland. Having been educated at King's School, Worcester, he was commissioned into the Royal Air Force as a Pilot Officer (General Duties) in July 1938, he saw active service on the North-West Frontier of India.
With the outbreak of the Second World War, Fyson was made Squadron Leader in September 1942. He flew with No. 620 Squadron and was 'A' Flights Commander. He was the Pilot of Stirling LK395 B that took off on the night of 4 February 1944 for an Op for the Special Operations Executive (S.O.E.) to the south-east of France. Hit by light anti-aircraft fire, they crashed at St Denis-de-Palin near Bourges, Avord. All the crew - including Fyson - were killed in action and are now buried in the St Doulchard Communal Cemetery.
