China 1900, no clasp (Seaman J. Whitelaw. Shanghai Vols.), good very fine
John Whitelaw was born at Glasgow, Scotland in 1873, although a year of birth of 1877 is also stated on other official documents. He first went to sea in 1890 and was living and working on the rivers around Shanghai, being a Seaman of the Shanghai Volunteer Corps during the Boxer Rebellion. Having been married at Shanghai in 1902, he was the Captain of the Mei-foo by 1905 and Hsin Chang by 1910 and took United States Navy Certificate No. 2518, issued in San Francisco in December 1917, when he was a Diver on the Greenwood. Whitelaw was a river pilot for the Taku Pilot Company by 1920.
