Indian Mutiny 1857-59, 1 clasp, Central India (Lieut. D. M. M. Inge, 8th Hussars), slight edge bruise, very fine
Denison Montague Miller Inge was born at Seamer, Yorkshire in 1837, the son of Mary and Reverend John Inge. He was commissioned Ensign without purchase on 20 July 1844 and joined the 31st Foot before transferring to the rank of Cornet on 16 October 1857 with the 8th Hussars. He served with this unit in Central India, the Regiment's role in this campaign is well attested to in Fanny Duberly's Campaigning Experiences in Rajpootana and Central India: during the Suppression of the Mutiny, 1857-1858. Better-known for her Crimean diary Duberly's husband was the Paymaster for the Regiment and as such she was present for the war.
Inge's entry on the medal roll notes that he transferred to the 6th Dragoons upon the conclusion of the campaign, whilst he penned A Subaltern's Diary. He is listed as transferring to 18th Light Dragoon as Lieutenant in 1859 however at the time of his marriage at Tarring Church in 1869 Inge was noted as serving with the 'Inniskilling Dragoons'.
Settling at Barmby on Moor, Pocklington, Inge owned the 300 acre Grange Farm. He joined the 11th (Pocklington) East Riding Rifle Volunteers from 6th Dragoons on 18 March 1872 with the rank of Captain. Further advanced Major with the 2nd East Riding Rifles Volunteers in 1881 he resigned two years later with the rank of Honorary Lieutenant Colonel and died in London on 4 May 1905.
