The obverse of this splendid 600 Escudos banknote features the portrait of Afonso de Albuquerque, a prominent figure in Portuguese history known for his role in establishing the Portuguese colonial empire in the Indian Ocean. Alburquerque served as viceroy of Portuguese India from 1509 to 1515. The design features a bold green with a blend of orange pink and yellow, whilst the denomination of the note is featured on all four corners of the obverse. Portuguese text on both sides of this banknote reinforces the colonial empire of this period, with the note dating 1959. On the reverse, an image of a man gazing at a ship in the distance is showcased,
