Daniel Isaac Eaton was a printer and publisher, most known for his publication of Thomas Paine's Rights of Man. Thomas Paine was an English-born American political activist, philosopher and revolutionary. Eaton himself was also somewhat of a revolutionary and political thinker. He was tried on multiple times for the publication of seditious material against the King. He was eventually found guilty of libel but managed to flee to America for three years, only to face fifteen months in prison on his return, and the destruction of £28,000 worth of stock by fire. In 1812 he was sentenced to eighteen months in Newgate Prison and then an hour in the pillory where he was cheered and showered with flowers the whole time. He died in poverty a few years afterwards. For some time, he occupied a shop at "The Cock and Swine" the emblem of which is featured on the reverse of the token.
