Roman Empire, Hadrian (AD 117-138), AR 'Descriptive' Denarii, struck c. 130-137 (5): i) Rome, HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P, laureate head right, rev. ADVENTVS AVG, Roma, in military attire and holding a sceptre, clasping hands with Hadrian, togate, 3.07g (RIC 1983; BMC 583), good fine; ii) another, as before, rev. LIBERALITAS AVG VI, Liberalitas standing left, holding cornucopiae and abacus, 3.19g (RIC 2018; BMC 665 var. (cf. BM 1987, 0712.24)), good fine; iii) another, as before, but with bare head right, 3.23g (RIC 2019; BMC 663), near very fine, some deposits, rare; iv) another, as before, laureate head right, rev. FELICITAS AVG, Felicitas standing left with caduceus and branch, 3.02g (RIC 2038; BMC 608), verdigris, corrosion to reverse, good; v) another, as before, rev. SALVS AVG, Salus standing right feeding snake round altar with patera, 3.15g (RIC 2047; BMC 719), about fine; (5).

Hadrian's final choice of obverse inscription gives rise to the 'Descriptive' phase of coinage throughout the 130s, with the Consulship and Pater Patriae transplanted from the reverse, leaving there a simple description of whichever deity happens to be portrayed.
