(Tsarist) Russia, Restoration of the Winter Palace, St Petersburg, AR Medal, 1839, by H. Gube, crowned cypher of Nicholas I, rev. view of the Winter Palace, 'RESORATION BEGAN 1838 CONSECRATED 1839' in three lines in exergue, plain edge, 34mm, 20.70g (Diakov 551.1; Smirnov 498), with integral suspension loop, some scuffing to the edges and pinmarking to the fields, otherwise brilliant and with a most handsome marbled cabinet toning in hues of blue and ochre, extremely fine, rarely encountered in commerce, exceedingly so in this condition

In December of 1837 a catastrophic fire severely damaged the Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg. Work to restore the building to its former glory commenced in the following months and was finally completed in 1839. Upon completion medals were struck and awarded to participants who helped in the restoration. A total of 175 gold medals were produced and 7,818 in silver.
