Hamer writing in the British Numismatic Journal in 1903 states; 'In the Universal British Directory of 1790, Abraham Sewart is described as a brass and bell-founder, Market Street. Thomas Harrison of Chapel Road, was the architect for the bridge and also for certain alternations and additions to the castle. The bridge is 459 feet long, and at the time it was built, was said "to be one of the finest of its size in Europe"; it cost £12,000 and was erected at the expense of the county.'
