The Pritchard Collection of 18th Century Provincial Tokens and Commemorative Medals

These tokens are said to have passed current among the workmen engaged in the making of the Basingstoke Canal. John Pinkerton was the Secretary, and doubtless several of the early impressions would have be given to shareholders and other interested parties, who would have naturally been interested in the undertaking and also in the novel local currency.
